Essex Shed Network partnership

The purpose of a Community Shed is to create a comfortable environment where people can meet and find peer support, networking opportunities and participate in individual or group projects

Although sheds are open to anyone, we are particularly encouraging men to attend, as research indicates some sections of the male population feel socially isolated

We now have two sheds which hold sessions on a Wednesday and Thursday and are attended by regular groups of “shedders”.  The Little Canfield shed is on the site of the community cooperative Local Food (&more!) and the second shed is in Barnston on the Rainbow Rural Education Centre site.

We have recently acquired a container which we are adapting to become a shed venue in Harlow and are progressing well with a potential shed site in Saffron Walden.  Future venues include trialing “virtual” sheds for those unable to attend a traditional shed venue.

The Shed Project has been supported with private donations of power tools and other equipment from local people, allowing us to equip our sheds to a high standard.

Benefits of participating in Community Sheds

Research has shown that participating in a community shed programme:

  • Increases social confidence and levels of social activity
  • Decreases feelings of loneliness and isolation
  • Impacts positively on physical health
  • Decreases participants dependence on health services
